Why ACARA revised the curriculum again
The Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority (ACARA) published version 9 (v9) of the Australian Curriculum in April 2022, with most states beginning implementation in 2023 and 2024. The revision was not cosmetic — it was the most substantial rewrite since the curriculum was first published in 2010. For homeschooling families, understanding what changed matters because your state's registration authority will increasingly expect alignment to v9 rather than v8.4.
The headline goals of the revision were: reduce content overcrowding, sharpen the focus on literacy and numeracy foundations, strengthen alignment between year levels, and modernise how digital and sustainability capabilities are embedded.
The most visible change: the AC9 code format
Every content description in the Australian Curriculum has a unique identifier. In v8.4, these codes were relatively long and inconsistently formatted. In v9, every code follows a strict schema:

This codification is significant for homeschoolers because digital tools — including AI tutors and mastery trackers — can now map directly to a named descriptor with no ambiguity. When your child's learning log references AC9M3N01, both you and a VRQA or NESA assessor can look up exactly what that means. There is no more "approximately Year 3 maths" — there is a precise code.
What changed in Mathematics
The most structurally significant change in Maths was the consolidation of strands. v8.4 had three content strands (Number and Algebra, Measurement and Geometry, Statistics and Probability). v9 reorganised these into six thematic strands:

2. Algebra
3. Measurement
4. Space (previously Geometry)
5. Statistics
6. Probability
The separation of Algebra from Number is particularly important in the early years. In v9, algebraic thinking — recognising patterns, describing relationships — begins in Foundation year, not Year 7. This reflects decades of research showing that early exposure to algebraic reasoning, even without formal notation, builds stronger mathematical foundations.
Practical implication: If you were using a v8.4-aligned curriculum programme for a Year 3 child and covering "patterns and algebra" as a Year 7 concept, you are now behind where v9 expects you to be. Check whether your resources have been updated.
What changed in English
English v9 restructured the three language modes (Language, Literacy, Literature) and placed greater explicit emphasis on phonics and structured literacy in Foundation to Year 2. This is a direct response to the evidence from the 2023 National Year 1 Phonics Check review.
Key changes for primary-age homeschoolers:
- Foundation and Year 1 now have explicit phonics sequencing within the content descriptions
- The "Language" strand has cleaner sub-strands: phonics and word knowledge, grammar and punctuation, vocabulary
- "Multimodal" texts are more prominent — the curriculum explicitly recognises that children encounter meaning through images, audio and digital text, not just printed words
For homeschoolers, this means your English programme should include explicit, systematic phonics instruction in the early years. An AI tutor that teaches phonics incidentally (through exposure to text) rather than explicitly (through structured phoneme-grapheme instruction) is not aligned to v9.
Proficiency levels: a shift from achievement standards to descriptors
v8.4 used achievement standards as a single benchmark per year level. v9 introduces a more granular proficiency framework with four levels: Needs additional support, Developing, Achieving, and Exceeding. Each content description now has associated examples of what each proficiency level looks like.
This matters for homeschoolers for two reasons. First, it makes it easier to honestly assess where your child sits relative to year-level expectations without having to declare them simply "at standard" or "not at standard." Second, it gives you a richer vocabulary for your learning plan and assessor conversations.
How homeschool families should think about the curriculum
The Australian Curriculum is a framework, not a teaching programme. It tells you what students should learn, not how or in what sequence (beyond the year-level groupings). This is actually good news for home educators: you have complete flexibility in pedagogy, resources, and pacing, as long as you can demonstrate coverage of the content descriptions.
A practical approach for a v9-aligned home education programme:
1. Map your child's year level to the relevant content descriptions. For a Year 4 child, download the v9 content descriptions for Maths, English, Science, and HASS. These are publicly available on the ACARA website.
2. Note the AC9 codes. Keep a simple spreadsheet (or use a digital platform that does this automatically) showing which codes you have addressed and which remain.
3. Don't try to cover everything in isolation. Many v9 content descriptions can be addressed through integrated projects. A geography investigation about water cycles covers Science and HASS simultaneously. Documenting this integration is legitimate.
4. Use the proficiency descriptors honestly. If your child is Developing in AC9M4N03 (multiplication), say so in your plan. Describe the support you are providing. This is more credible to an assessor than claiming Achieving across the board.
The transition timeline
Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland began mandating v9 alignment from 2024. Western Australia and South Australia followed in 2025. As of 2026, all states and territories have moved to v9 for state school reporting. Registration authorities in all jurisdictions now expect home-education plans to reference v9 descriptors.
If you are still referencing v8.4 content descriptions in your VRQA or NESA learning plan, update them. The content has not changed dramatically in most areas, but using the correct codes demonstrates currency and makes the assessor's job easier.
